Commercial 50% or light grade shade cloth is a high-quality monofilament shade cloth designed for medium to heavy duty applications. The fabric complies with Australian Standards for shade and strength and provides accurate shade factors. This makes it suitable for nurseries and other commercial applications as well, of course, for domestic gardeners. It is also suitable for other applications which require the fabric to be placed under tension.

The 1.83m wide x 50m weights approximately 18kg and the 3.66m wide x 50m weighs approximately 36kg.
The knit of all 50% commercial shade cloth is identical in all colours however white does not block as much light as darker colours hence, a greater light transmission, that is, a lower shade factor.

No. It is a knitted fabric and uses a lock stitch construction. The cut edge will be raw but it will not unravel.

The fabric is very colourfast however over the longer term some slight fading can occur when the fabric has been constantly exposed to environments of high UVR.
Domestic shade cloth is made with a tape filler to increase its opacity. This tape filler is knitted into the fabric between the strands of monofilament. Think of monofilament as being like fishing line. When it is knitted together it forms a fabric, in this case, shade cloth.
The difference between domestic and commercial shade cloth is that commercial shade cloth is 100% monofilament (knitted fishing line). It has no tape filler. This makes commercial shade cloth very strong and suitable for use under tension. Domestic shade cloth is not suitable for high tension applications such as shade sails because the tape filler stretches at a different rate to the monofilament. Domestic (Universal) shade cloth is designed to be spread over a framework, like a pergola, not tensioned out like a shade sail.
