Inground Removable Umbrella Bases, also known as Pavement Sleeves are an important accessory for the installation of cafe & market umbrellas, particularly in commercial situations such as cafes and restaurants.

Often umbrellas need to be removed and stored inside during the night and be put back in situ during the day. Using this inground removable sleeve system makes it very easy to remove the umbrella completely. Once the umbrella is removed, the flip cap can be pushed closed leaving a competely level surface with no trip hazards.

Inground removable bases are also recommended for umbrellas being installed in breezy conditions. Unlike a normal umbrella baseplate, the actual socket is concreted into the ground making it very secure.

  • The inground section (called the socket) is cast alloy which has been galvainsed and powdercoated.
  • The top section (called the spigot) is steel which has been galvanised and powdercoated.

The actual cast alloy sleeve which goes into the ground is a standard size but it accepts variable sized sockets. This enables it to accept umbrellas with the following pole dimamaters;

  • 48mm pole diameter
  • 58mm pole diameter

Typically, installation is carried our by a tradesman or handy person. If going into concrete the ideal way to do the installation is to core-drill a hole, 150mm round by at least 300mm deep. The base is secured using concrete or non-shrink grout.

The Spigot itself is then permanently secured to the pole of the umbrella with 2 bolts (not supplied). That way it becomes an extension of the umbrella pole itself and when the umbrella is fitted into the socket, it retains it's normal height.

Inground Removable Umbrella Base

These bases are best suited for use with Aluminium or steel umbrella poles however we've seen many customers use them on timber umbrellas also.

The system works by fitting a spigot onto the pole of the umbrella. This extends the length of the umbrella pole allowing it to drop into the inground socket. Once inserted, a lockingpin goes through the flip cap and the spigot securing the umbrella and spigot into position. A pad lock can be added for extra security as required.

Currently we are supplying the inground pavement sleeve system in Black only.

Final comments

Inground removable bases are a reliable and safe method of securing umbrellas in windy contitions or where baseplates are not suitable. Once installed they are very easy to operate and help cafe and restaurant owners maximise their usable space.

They are suitable for use in both commercial and domestic situations.

Will these bases work with my umbrella?

Inground removable sleeves will work with most market umbrellas that have a pole diameter of 48 or 58mm. They are not suitable for umbrella whcich have internal mechanisims because 2 bolts need to be drilled through the umbrella pole which could interfere with the internal operations of some umbrellas. See comments regarding timber umbrellas.

My umbrella is timber, is it suitable for use with this system?

Care must be taken with timber umbrellas. This is because 2 holes need to be drilled through the central pole of the umbrella. Over time this could add extra stress to the timber pole and may cause damage. Ths sustem will work with timber umbrellas however it is at the customer discression as to whether or not they want to drill into their umbrella. Damaged caused will not be considred as a warranty claim.

My umbrella is aluminum, is it suitable for use with this system?

Yes, providing there are not internal gears or pulleys at the lower portion of your umbrella pole, this system should work perfectly with your umbrella.

Do I need Council Permission to use this umbrella bases?

If you are installing into a pavement that is on Council property then you will almost certainly require Council Permission. If you are installing this system into an area in your home then you may not need Council Approval. If in doubt we always recommend that you check first with local authorities.

Can I install it myself?

Usually a core hole is required to be dirlled into pavers or concrete. This can be a rather specialised job that requires a trades person skilled in doing this work. If you are simply digging a hole into dirt, then the average DIY’er should be fine to do install the base.

Remember: Whenever digging or drilling into the ground IT IS VITAL that you check and confirm that there are no services (pipes, cables etc) in the area before you drill.

Can I get them in any colour?

We used to supply htem in silver. We now supply them in black. It wouldn’t be hard to purchase a can of spray paint and spray over the powdercoated surface if you wanted to change the colour.

How strong are they?

These bases are quite secure and suitable for use with market umbrellas where the winds are mild.
