Check UV Radiation levels with the push of a button.  Ideal for monitoring UV levels when outdoors.  Have one handy where ever you go.

UV Meters

Brief

Sun protection today is critical.  Whenever we spend time in the sun we are exposed to UV radiation.  Because we can't see UV Rays, it can be misleading to know just what the UV intensity is.  A Personal UV metre can be a very useful tool in determining exactly what the ambient UV level is.  Once that is known, the appropriate protection can be taken.

Key Features

  • Measures UVA & UVB
  • Four digits
  • Full clock function with alarm
  • 12 /12 hour format
  • Four year calander

Product Disclaimer

The Use of a Personal UV Metre will not prevent skin cancer.  It is the users responsibility to take all precautions possible when exposed to UV Rays.  A personal UV metre is only a part of an overall sun protection strategy.  For further information on skin protection contact the Cancer Council or Cancer Protection Agency in your state or region.

General Sun Protection Information

What does UV mean?

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is radiation that is emitted by the sun. It is divided into three sub-sections:

  • UVA
  • UVB
  • UVC
The earth's atmosphere blocks all UVC radiation but only a small amount of UVB, so the ultraviolet radiation at the earth's surface is mostly UVA and UVB. UVB is the most harmful for humans.

How can I protect myself from UV Radiation?

For best protection from the sun, a combination of sun protection measures is recommended including;
  • Seeking shade
  • Wearing protective clothing that cover the arms and legs as well as the body
  • Wearing a hat that shades the face and neck
  • Wearing wrap around sunglasses
  • Using SPF30+ broad spectrum sunscreen which is reapplied every two hours
  • Monitoring UV levels
The UV Index

When the UV Index reaches 3 or above, skin damage and particularly sunburn can occur and the risk of skin cancer increases, so sun protection is required.

Table 1. UV Index

1-2 3-5 6-7 8-10 11+
LOW    MODERATE       HIGH     VERY HIGH   EXTREME

UV levels are largely determined by latitude, cloud cover, time of year and time of day. For this reason it is important to understand that the UV index can change each day, and is different for each month and each season.

SunSmart recommends people should get into the habit of checking the UV Index regularly to see when they need to adopt effective sun protection behaviours.  A Personal UV metre is a useful tool in an overall sun protection strategy.
